The research is based on the material of the detective novel "The Hound of the Baskervilles" written by the English writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It has been revealed that the common case of the noun without a preposition conveys the same connections in modern English, which in Ukrainian are conveyed by the nominative, accusative or dative cases. These connections are realized by different cases of noun inflection in the Ukrainian language, in English - by the syntactic function of the noun.
