Підрахунки проводилися на основі денотатно-номінативної систематизації пропріальних одиниць. Згідно з нею, до цього онімного поля належать: 1) тероніми – найменування об’єктів суші; 2) гідроніми – номінації водних об’єктів; 3) натурал-катастрофоніми – власні назви стихійних лих;4) мікротопоніми. Встановлено, що загальна кількість топонімів становить 371 500 лексем, проте орієнтовно лише четверта частина з них (90 000) може функціонувати як одиниця мови.The article defines the approximate number of toponyms– place names. In this case number of features are taken into account: 1) the dynamics of onomasticon is determined on the basis of the analysis of numerous works, which described different levels of the onymic vocabulary; 2) the chronological index is used for certain categories of proprietary units; it allows you to take into account the number of onyms that existed in previous years, decades and even centuries; 3) the phenomena of polysemy, homonymy and synonymy, which appear in the onomastics in a peculiar way, are taken into account; 4) not only Ukrainian toponyms, but also toponyms borrowed from other languages that people are actively using in Ukraine are recorded; 5) the number of components of the Ukrainian toponymshas been determined separately, the number of the whole set of the place names is clarified later. Calculations were made on the basis of denotatively-nominative systematization of proprietary units. According to this systematization this onym field include: 1) teronyms– the proper names of objects that are on the land (143 500 total, of which 55 000 nominations can be attributed to the sphere of language); 2) hydronyms – the proper names of a body of water (106 000,000 total, of which 30,000 are confirmed in the language); 3) natural-catastrophonym– the proper names of natural disasters as geographical phenomena (500 total, of which only dozens of nominations function in the language); microtoponyms– the proper names of small geographical objects, both water and located on land (121 500 total, of which no more than 5 000 nominations can be attributed to the sphere of language). It has been established that the total number of toponyms is 371500, but only a quarter of them (up to 90 000) can function as a unit of language.
