It considers the effect of NATO membership on Portugal’s development. It clarifies the meaning of lusotropicalism and outcomes of colonial wars for the country in general and for the Portuguese armed forces in particular. The article explores the reasons and the nature of the Movement of Captains and the Armed Forces Movement. It clarifies the circumstances under which a military coup transformed into a democratic revolution. It also analyses the consequences of the National Salvation Junta’s controversial activities and the essence of democratic transformations in Portugal, underlining the international significance of the Carnation Revolution.У статті проаналізовано особливості Нової держави, акцентовано увагу на її пристосуванні до зміни міжнародного становища.
