    Diagnosing the negative psycho-emotional states among students

    The article deals with the problem of diagnostics of negative psycho-emotional states among students. The research done demonstrates that during the period of study at higher educational establishment students often experience states of stress, depression, apathy, fear, asthenia, rigidity, anxiety, aggression, frustration, etc. Such states are predetermined by the fact that new conditions of student’s life lead to defensive reactions to various kinds of threats: threat to positive outcome of an important activity, threat to life, threat to well-being, threat to prestige. Negative psycho-emotional states affect various spheres of young people’s lives and lead to a deterioration of their wellness, health condition as well as to the rise of psychosomatic and psychoneurological diseases. In order to get a better understanding of peculiarities of development and expression of negative psycho-emotional states the diagnostic research of all students at Khmelnytskyi National University whose major is Psychology has been done. The findings demonstrate that starting the first days of study at university the students undergo the effects of various negative psycho-emotional states such as: depressed mood, sadness, anxiety, concern, decreased intellectual productivity, unreasonable malaise, intermittent sleep, decreased working ability. However, while studying at university, they learn gradually to overcome and control their negative emotions and experiences. The findings also demonstrate that not all students, even in their final year of study, succeed in it. Therefore, the need to apply methods and means of psychoprophylaxis of negative psycho-emotional states among students has been developed and substantiated.

    Students' L2 Psychological and Phonological Listening Comprehension Difficulties Diagnostics

    Listening is an integral part of communicative process and one of the most difficult skills to develop. The complexity of this concept leads to difficulties in defining it. Listening is viewed by scientists as a process, as a multidimensional construct, as a competency. It has the inner form and does not emerge in the outer plan. Such mechanisms of listening as mechanisms of perception, mechanisms of inner speaking, mechanisms of memory, mechanisms of speech segmentation, mechanisms of interpretation, anticipation mechanisms have been described in the article. To develop students’ listening skills it is necessary to find out difficulties that they face while listening to a text in a foreign language. Listening comprehension difficulties have three sources: those connected with the listener, connected with the speaker and connected with outer factors. The following students’ L2 listening comprehension difficulties have been found out: difficulties connected with a lack of students’ knowledge about the world; insufficient communicative competence that consists of phonetic, lexical, grammatical, textual, sociocultural and functional aspects; psychological factors (inability to focus attention, listener’s impatience to the interlocutor, not enough developed listening memory, low motivation); individual features of a student (individual cognitive features, age and personal interests, negative experience gained earlier while doing listening comprehension tasks); difficulties connected with incompetent text selection (mismatch between text complexity and level of students’ listening comprehension development: high tempo, a lot of new words, new grammar structures, too saturated information content, difficult structure of the text, a lot of implications in the text for listening); outer factors (bad quality of the record, low or too high volume of sound, noise interference). A questionnaire for finding out individual students’ psychological and phonological L2 listening comprehension difficulties has been created and recommendations on diminishing these difficulties have been offered.

    Текст як віддзеркалення множинної етнічної ідентичності (на матеріалі автобіографій Н. Мандели та П. Абрагамса)

    У статті розглядаються особливості становлення та актуалізації множинної етнічної ідентичності особистості в умовах поліетнічного та багатомовного середовища, котре є передумовою трансформації світогляду особистості, змін у структурі її етнічної ідентичності у результаті опанування другої мови. Фокус даного дослідження зосереджений на вивченні текстів автобіографій південно-африканських громадських діячів Нельсона Мандели «Довгий шлях до свободи» (A Long Walk to Freedom) та Пітера Абрагамса «Пароль – Свобода» (Tell Freedom), написаних південно-африканським варіантом англійської мови. Встановлення каналів походження виокремленої культурно маркованої лексики у зазначених вище автобіографіях дозволило зафіксувати факти множинної етнічності авторів. Мова як складна, еволюційна, ієрархічно побудована мегасистема зазнає змін на усіх своїх рівнях, існуючи у певному культурно-історичному середовищі. Характер та динаміка змін визначаються низкою факторів, серед яких ситуації мовних контактів. Гнучкість мовної системи та її кумулятивність із легкістю дозволяють мові вбирати в себе культурно маркований лексичний матеріал «чужої» мови. Такі процеси зумовлені тим, що мова не просто не існує незалежно від середовища, котрим для неї є суспільство; вона виступає засобом об’єктивації дійсності, відображенням світу особистості. Особистість опановує мову, використовує її у повсякденному житті, вбираючи в себе елементи національних культур, котрі актуалізуються у культурно маркованій лексиці, а також будує власну мовну картину світу та створює систему множинних етнічностей, що знаходять свої відображення у мові. Взаємодія особистості із представниками інших етнічних спільнот у межах одного середовища увиразнює роль мови з одного боку як етноінтегрувального засобу, а з іншого – диференціюючого.
