The article deals with characteristics of denotative and nominative structure of means of transport as a class of tovaronyms. Being relatively young subsystem of general language, automobile terminology system draws attention with its linguistic ambiguity. Proper names of automobiles were analyzed by A. A. Isakova, I. S. Karabulatova, N. V. Nikulina, Yu. V. Kushch. However, currently there is no denotative and nominative structure of such proprial units. Proper names of means of transport are part of pragmatonymy, namely tovaronymy.
Transportonyms are nominations of means of transport that are further subdivided into several subtypes. These include automobileonyms (nominations of automobile means: passenger cars and trucks, busses etc); armotransportonyms (nominations of military means of transport); velotransportonyms (proper names of bicycles); hydrotransportonyms (names of vessels); flytransportonyms (proper names of means of elevated track transport); volatransportonyms (proper names of rail transport); mototransportonyms (names of motorcycles, mopeds etc); functiotransportonyms (nominations of multifunctional means of transport for specific jobs). Groups of means of transport are terminologically divided into other subgroups.
Transportonyms should be differentiated from poreyonyms that are individual names of means of transport (for instance, transportonyms “ЛАЗ-695 Turyst”, poreyonym “Yunist”).
By the character of nomination denotations, new typology of transportonyms primarily includes general theoretical issues that generally supplement respective subsystem of onomastics.
The proposed classification allows more detailed structuring of the Ukrainian language onomasticon.
