This article explores the evolution of competency-based education in the United Kingdom, with particular attention to its implications for the professional training of linguists. It begins by emphasising the importance of strengthening students’ cognitive abilities in order to enhance their engagement in shaping both educational and social environments.
The study examines the transition from traditional academic assessment systems to competency-based evaluation frameworks, a shift strongly promoted by the Bologna Process. It highlights the growing need for interdisciplinary standards in contemporary education.
The article provides a historical overview of the competency-based approach in the UK, tracing its development from the 1980s onwards, including the establishment of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) and national occupational standards. These frameworks, developed through collaboration with key stakeholders, aim to ensure that graduates acquire the competencies required for effective professional performance.
Furthermore, the study discusses the integration of digital skills and adaptability into modern competency frameworks, reflecting the evolving demands of a rapidly changing labour market. By analysing the UK experience, the article offers insights into improving the training of future linguists in Ukraine, aligning educational outcomes with real-world professional requirements while maintaining high standards of competence.
