The article tackles the issue of telescopic words formation and functioning in American sports media discourse. The author notes that most telescopic words have situational character and are not listed in dictionaries. In many cases, context is the only way to identify the meaning of a telescopic word. As American sports media discourse tends to use shorter forms or narration, formation of telescopic words becomes one of the most productive ways of compounding in the given discourse. Phenomenon of haplology is of great interest for the study of telescopic words (formed with help of placing two phonemes at the joint of two words). It has been emphasized that haplologic words are primarily occasional. Such words have certain level of expressiveness peculiar to sports commentators. Expressiveness is reached not only due to combination of two words, but also due to pun. It has been revealed that telescopic words can often create word-forming morphemes close to suffixoids when the second part of the word gains more word-forming potency and isolation of its meaning from the meaning of the original stem. The research showed that in some cases telescopy may result in formation of neologisms. However, this phenomenon is not frequent in American sports discourse as shorts forms of narration, expressiveness, and pun are the key objectives for using telescopic words. It has been revealed that the law of lexical units saving is one of the reasons for changes in a language. It manifests itself on all levels (phonetic, morphological, syntactical, and lexical) and is realized by two means: shortening and synthesis. Motivation of a telescopic word and its meaning often coincide. In American sports discourse, telescopic words that are formed by combination of two stems are predominant. However, use of proper names as parts of telescopic words has become widely common in the given discourse, which calls for further research.
