The article deals with the portrait of “little man” in the tradition of Russian literature
in the beginning of XX century (example of Panteleimon Romanov’s short stories). In his stories the
author often represents the hero, who can be attributed to the textbook’s type of “little man” on several
arguments. “Little man of Romanov” is pretty close to the hero of M. Zoshchenko. His stories were
distinguished by fine irony, hidden psychology, really elegance of language.
Nowadays the researchers pay attention to study of “little man” in a system of small narrative
genres in the literature of XIX – early XX centuries. (Dziga, A. Gutorov, N. Neporada, E. Shafranskaya,
M. Epstein). The interest is due to the fact that, despite of the frequent using of the phrase “little man”,
its literary sense has not been fully defined yet. However, when we try to analyze the creative heritage
of the writers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries it becomes obvious that the type “little man”
appears in numerous writer’s works and “travels” with them. This concept is used most often in relation
to the works of A. Pushkin, N. Gogol, M. Dostoevsky and A. Chekhov.
“Little man”, who does not fit the canons of socialist realism, migrated to the literary underground
and began to exist in the household satire of M. Zoshchenko, M. Bulgakov, V. Voinovich. P. Romanov
takes a worthy place among these writers. His stories continue to illuminate problems of short stories
about “little man”. Although it is another interpretation of an old theme in the new historical conditions.
Among the heroes of P. Romanov is difficult to isolate one, whose name would be so closely associated
with the image of “little man”, as, for example, the name of Gogol’s Akaky Bashmachkin or Ionych of
Chekhov. In P. Romanov’s short stories features of the “little man” are scattered throughout the heroes
of his stories, and we can’t highlight any one colorful character, because this figure is collective and
must gather by the little parts to get single image.
Traditionally, the main feature of the “little man” is its low and often subordinate social position,
this is the man whom no one pays that no one appreciates, above which each allows himself to mock
and realizes his little place in life. “Little man” obsequious tend to refer to anyone who has any formal
authority, although authority, which is based on the law of the strongest.
That’s why the theme of the “little man” is paid a great interest in P. Romanov’s small prose. In his
stories the author often represents the hero, who can be attributed to the textbook’s type of “little man”
on several arguments. “Little man of Romanov” is pretty close to the hero of M. Zoshchenko. His stories
were distinguished by fine irony, hidden psychology, really elegance of language.
