dc.description.abstractThe article deals with the comparative analysis of English and Ukrainian paroemias. Actuality of theme is predefined by universal character of paroemia units in modern linguistics, which are related to the reflection of national culture and history in different languages. The main aim of the article is to identify common and distinctive features of Ukrainian and English paroemias. The object of the study is paroemias as linguistic units of the English language. In modern science, the term «paroemia» is used as well as the terms «proverb» and «saying» on the definition of the genre. At comparison of paremiaes attention is drawn primarily to the determination of general associative value, the similarity of the situation in which it is appropriate to use the aphorism. There are a lot of paroemias in Ukrainian and English, which are absolutely equivalent. Tracing method is often used in the transmission of proverbs. It is revealed that a characteristic feature of Ukrainian proverbs is a significant amount of educational elements, wordplay, rhymes, atmosphere of waggery. English proverbs, on the contrary, are endowed with hints of fatalism: Having analyzed English and Ukrainian paroemias, we came to the conclusion that proverbs and sayings of the English and Ukrainian languages may be similar in lexical structure, communicative value and connotation, but a considerable part of them has its own characteristics.uk_UA
