Анотація
У статті проаналізовано особливості Нової держави, акцентовано увагу на її пристосуванні до зміни міжнародного становища. Розглянуто вплив членства в НАТО на розвиток Португалії. Досліджено обставини військового перевороту та його переростання в демократичну революцію. Наголошено на міжнародному значенні «Революції гвоздик».

Present article analyses specific features of the New State and António Salazar’s regime and focuses on its adapting to changing international circumstances. It considers the effect of NATO membership on Portugal’s development. It clarifies the meaning of lusotropicalism and outcomes of colonial wars for the country in general and for the Portuguese armed forces in particular. The article explores the reasons and the nature of the Movement of Captains and the Armed Forces Movement. It clarifies the circumstances under which a military coup transformed into a democratic revolution. It also analyses the consequences of the National Salvation Junta’s controversial activities and the essence of democratic transformations in Portugal, underlining the international significance of the Carnation Revolution.
