The article analyzes Ukrainian and international linguistic studies from the last decades on variability as a linguistic phenomenon. The issue of language variability as a material expression of the dynamism of the system and an indicator of its viability is related to scientific and theoretically significant areas of linguistics. A keen interest in the variety of language means can be explained by the fact that only a comprehensive study of this phenomenon will allow one to understand the principles and patterns in the development of language functioning. Today, the issue of language variability still needs to be studied in theoretical and practical terms of its development more in detail. The analysis of today’s linguistic studies on language variability shows that the phenomenon of linguistic parallelism is of great interest to scholars. In modern linguistic discourse, researchers reveal the causes for the occurrence of variants, elaborate the criteria for variability as a linguistic phenomenon, classify and systematize variative linguistic units, describe the functionality of lexical, morphological and syntactic and other variants in the context of language practice and analyze the links between variability and the fixed literary norm. Nowadays, the analysis of language variability is a promising trend in linguistics, especially given the constant development of language and the emergence of new linguistic material. Further research on variability can identify different variants of literary language, create a dynamic theory of norms and establish the main trends in the development of literary language. The study of linguistic parallelism can answer the questions, long overdue and discussed in Ukrainian and international linguistics. They include the correlation between the variants of literary language (structural and/or territorial) during specific periods; the identification of the causes and mechanisms of variability development; variability as a means for loosening or standardizing the language system; factors in language variability in terms of retrospection and prospection.
