The paper deals with the need of using fairy-tales in teaching English. Fairy-tales are beloved by people of all ages. They are in many songs, cartoons, story books, movies, commercials, programs, etc. The paper describes how fairy-tales can be used in different ways at the English lessons: as a didactic material; as a technology that helps to organize the explanation of the new material and the reproduction of the one learned earlier; as a type of work on the development of speech and expanding students’ vocabulary. This approach allows teachers: 1) to create a classroom atmosphere that helps to encourage students to ask questions and seek answers, take (as a basis) the following types of training that would facilitate the development of critical thinking and independent acquisition of knowledge, encourage reflection; 2) to apply existing methods, become a thoughtful professional, which means to learn how to observe carefully, identify problems and create new strategies to solve them; 3) to be a model for other students, transfer knowledge to them. In turn, students learn to think critically, solve difficult problems based on analysis of circumstances and relevant information, make thoughtful decisions, participate in discussions, communicate with other people; 4) to unload the students’ consciousness, remove negative emotions. Participants of interactive learning set learning objectives, develop a learning activity, identify problems in the course of training, study the reflection of their training activities. The paper presents both theoretical (analysis, comparison, generalization) and empirical (observation, induction, deduction, testing, evaluation) studies related to the effectiveness of using fairy-tales in teaching English. The essence and peculiarities of using fairy-tales in teaching English in foreign and domestic literature have been revealed. A diagnostic research among the students of Humanities of Khmelnytsky National University whose major is Psychology has been done. The findings demonstrate that students have a positive attitude to the use of fairy-tales and believe that they should be used at every lesson, because they can improve the quality of their knowledge, as well as interest in learning a foreign language, develop personal traits, which are necessary for future professional work. Therefore, the need to apply methods and means of fairy-tale usage for improving students’ skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing English has been developed and substantiated. Thus, a program of the influence of fairy-tales on overcoming the students’ communication barriers has also been presented in the paper.
