У статті подано опис темпоральних номінаторів, як лексичних показників реального і художнього часу на матеріалі художніх творів О.Генрі. Виявлені та проаналізовані три базові групи темпоральних номінаторів. Особливу увагу приділено образним темпоральним номінаторам, що є складниками різних стилістичних прийомів, зокрема концептуальних метафор.
The article deals with the temporal structure of the literary text and describes the temporal indicators as lexical markers of real and literary time in O. Henry’s works. The temporal structure of the literary text is a temporal frame, which largely determines the movement of storylines, their variability, sequence, and directly correlates with the composition of the story. The temporal structure of the literary text has not only grammatical means of expression (tense and aspect system of the verb), but also lexical means, which include nouns, adverbs and their combinations, which indicate time, as well as numerals and dates. It is stated in the article that all temporal indicators can be divided into three large groups: 1) temporal artefacts (watch, clock, calendar, pendulum); 2) temporal indicators that point to the time in general (time, hour, minute, 8.30, in the evening, September, summer), and 3) imaginative temporal indicators that are constituents of various stylistic devices, in particular conceptual metaphors. The third group is considered to be the most interesting in O. Henry’s short stories, since it has been highlighted that temporal indicator CLOCK can be personified (CLOCK IS A TYRANT, CLOCK IS A MONSTER, CLOCK IS A INSENSATE MONITOR OF BRASS AND STEEL), or depicted as artefact (CLOCKS ARE SHACKLE), or abstract notion (CLOCK IS AN EVIL, CLOCK IS A NUISANCE). The analysis of temporal indicator SPRING showed that it was mostly embodied into female images, such as LADY, WITCH, GODDESS, and NURSE. Temporal indicators play an important role in the temporal structure of the literary text: as time markers they help to manifest and perceive real and literary time. In O. Henry’s short stories, such temporal indicators, as time and clock(s) have a sufficiently high degree of frequency, which is regarded as an indisputable proof of their importance for the writer's individual style.
