Стаття присвячена актуальній проблемі перекладу англійських багатозначних слів. Проаналізовано сучасні
джерела поповнення лексики англійської мови. Розглянуто чинники, що впливають на характер полісемії. Визначається
особлива роль контексту при перекладі полісемантичної лексики. Надано практичні рекомендації викладачам і тим, хто
вивчає англійську мову при перекладі багатозначних слів. Запропоновано ефективний алгоритм дій для початківців з
практики перекладу англійських багатозначних слів.
The article is devoted to actual problems of translating english polisemantic words. The reasons of polysemy occurrence and the ways of its development are described and ambiguity. The concepts of polysemy and ambiguity are differentiated. The term “polysemy” has been determined. It is generally known that most words convey several concepts and thus possess the corresponding number of meanings. A word having several meanings is called polysemantic, and the ability of words to have more than one meaning is described by the term polysemy. Modern sources of English language vocabulary replanishment and the factors that influence the nature of polysemy are analyzed. The article determines the special role of context in translation of polysemantic vocabulary. Most words of the English language are polysemantic. They can mean different things in different contexts. The importance of studying the phenomenon of polysemy is obvious because it is the object of confusion and in order to provide a quantitative and qualitative growth of the language's expressive resources it is extremely important to investigate the semantic changes in the system of meanings in the English language. The process of enriching the vocabulary does not consist merely in adding new words to it, but, also, in the constant development of polysemy. Practical recommendations for teachers and students of the English language to work with the dictionary articles and ambiguous words are given. Polysemantic terms of the modern English language stimulate a great interest, because the structure of polysemantic terms which is spread on many branches of science and industry must be understood and translated correctly. Knowledge of polisemantic terms will help cope with the task of translation.
